Ara Cardew was one of my first ceramic instructors at Vermont Clay Studio. Miranda Thomas assisted he and several other English potters to get their green cards. At Vermont Clay Studio, we were fortunate to have Ara as an instructor on a fairly regular basis, while he worked for Miranda. Ara taught the traditional English slipware forms and decorating. He is a good teacher knowing how to communicate skills and demonstrate different forms. Ara’s grandfather was Michael Cardew who was well known in Great Britain and Africa for his ceramic work. As a side note, I still hear Ara’s voice when making teapots: how to belly out the form; paying attention to the shoulder; placement of the spout and handle.
