My mentor often said, “Try it and See”. This past week I had the privilege of recognizing the talents of our local student artists. In class, their art teachers asked them to think about what they love about our city’s annual Coast Guard Celebration. Then, they needed to think about how they would create that image on paper. We had more than 60 pieces of art to consider for our downtown’s banner program.
Each year, we hang banners on our lampposts for “the season”. This year, the banners are focused on the 100th Anniversary of Grand Haven honoring our Coast Guard men and woman’s service to our country. At Monday evening’s school board meeting, I was able to give a banner to each of the students with their artwork on it. A local citizen donated the funds so that each family could have their own banner. The kiddos were so cute. They were nervous about standing in front of the board and other adults in the room. I tried to make a joke of how large the banners are by holding one up and showing the kids that they are almost a big as I am tall.
A sweet moment happened when the school board members stood up and had a picture taken with the kids. Each of the board members were talking with the students about their artwork helping them roll the large banners up so that they could easily carry them back to their families. Lots of smiles in the room. It was a nice reminder of the good in our world.
