This holiday season felt different—quieter than most. I wasn’t stressed or worried about what was or wasn’t happening. I’ve been steadily reading a world history book, getting exercise with Leo and on my own, and putting in real time at the studio. This activity truly causes Studio Happenings – new ideas and work being made.
I knew, but didn’t really know, that simply showing up in the studio would get my brain humming. Lately I catch myself thinking about next steps while I’m working out, making meals, walking Leo—and even in my dreams.
Here’s where I’m headed with my clay work:
Years ago, I watched big snowballs floating in Lake Michigan. They were mesmerizing—drifting, bumping into each other, piling up along the ice at the shoreline. I’ve been intrigued by the idea of translating them into clay ever since. I don’t want to replicate the thing that speaks to me; I want to create a form that relates to it. I think I finally have an approach that makes sense. I’ll share progress on Instagram as I go.
Step one to begin the New Year:
Clean the studio and let go of the work that doesn’t thrill me.
Bob Walma and I spent a day on it and had some good laughs along the way.
