“Know when to hold them….”

Tried to fire my gas kiln last night – not successful.

I spent the end of last week and all day Monday, glazing pots. Did you know that it takes as long, if not longer, to properly glaze pots than it does to just form them? Every time I glaze, I call Sarah and say, “I can’t believe I am still glazing!” She just laughs. She has heard this from me at least 50 times. (Plus look at what I found for glazing bowls?)

Right now, I am thinking of the Kenny Roger’s song, “The Gambler”.

“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When the dealin’s done….”

(Thanks, Bob Walma, for the image.)

We have HIGH winds in Grand Haven. Last night and today. The wind is howling off the lake. The tall lodge pole pines around my studio are swaying. I have had to relight my kiln every hour since midnight last night. I thought maybe the thermocouple was going bad. Checked the thermocouple. No loose wires. Nothing looking out of the ordinary. Only fired the kiln 10 times with this model. Over-rode it. Still shutting down. So, I am thinking, we wait out the storm. First world problem and no one is going to die if I don’t fire this kiln today.

Have a wonderful day everyone. If you live in West Michigan, go check out Lake Michigan. The erosion is sad. The waves are amazing!!
