Description
Lake Michigan Sand Ceramic Bowl
A handmade ceramic bowl inspired by the changing surfaces of Lake Michigan.
On the exterior, I apply porcelain slip by hand, creating lines and textures that make me think of waves moving across the water and the patterns left behind as water moves across the sand. My Lake Michigan beach sand glaze settles over that textured surface, adding subtle variations in color and texture.
A darker band of Shino glaze provides a contrast between the light exterior and the inside of the bowl. Shino is wonderfully unpredictable. Carbon trapping during the firing creates patterns that are always different—sometimes they remind me of lichen and sometimes of the markings in an animal’s fur.
Inside, the orange Shino glaze moves from warm orange to darker, mottled areas. When I look into the bowl, those changes make me think of sunlight glinting across the surface of Lake Michigan. The light appears, disappears, and changes as the water moves.
At 6.5 inches across, this is a useful bowl for soup, salad, grains, fruit, or whatever becomes part of your everyday table.
