Description
Lake Michigan Ceramic Demijohn | Cyndi Casemier
This handmade ceramic demijohn begins with small coils of porcelain, built one on top of another. I leave the coils visible rather than smoothing them away. Their lines make me think of the movement of waves and the patterns left in the sand as water moves along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
My Lake Michigan beach sand glaze covers the exterior, settling into and around those lines and creating subtle variations across the surface. Look closely and you can see the small specks and changes in color created by the sand.
Near the neck, a small circular medallion carries another suggestion of moving water. The warm glaze at the opening provides a quiet contrast to the lighter surface below.
At 14.25 inches tall, this is a substantial piece that can stand on its own or hold a few simple branches, grasses, or dried stems. I especially like it with something uncomplicated that allows the form and surface of the vessel to remain part of what you see.
Handmade one coil at a time in my Grand Haven, Michigan studio. Cyndi Casemier is a Michigan artist walking the Lake Michigan shores daily.
