Lake Michigan Sand Ceramic Vase

This Lake Michigan ceramic vase is part of my handmade porcelain work shaped by shoreline light, sand, and water along the lakeshore here in Grand Haven.

The exterior surface includes real Lake Michigan beach sand layered into a proprietary glaze. As the piece fires, the sand softens into subtle textures that echo the quiet movement of water across the dunes.

Inclusions of beach glass, black and white shoreline sand, small stones, and other found materials are embedded into the surface — elements gathered while walking the waterfront that become part of the finished vessel.

The textures reference shifting sand, waves, and the changing shoreline. Small symbols of sun and moon appear along the surface, marking the steady rhythm of days spent near the lake.

The result is a tactile vessel that carries the feeling of the waterfront — sand moving, water shifting, light changing through the day.
