Description
Take a look at these Blue Handmade Bead and Spiral Accent Dangle Earrings by Lochlin Smith. Large and dramatic. Casual or formal, natural movements with an organic design.
Lochlin Smith is a well known New England artist focused on making hand-fabricated jewelry. Both of his parents were artists, making it easier for him to do the same.
In 1972, he left the intensity of New York City and moved to Vermont. He set up a studio in an old barn focusing on sculpture and painting. After a few years, he found himself designing jewelry. He twisted, torched, pounded, and shaped bronze rodsand sheets into unusual, one-of-a-kind earrings, bracelets, pins, and necklaces.
Lochlin draws inspiration from his own Celtic ancestry, as well a from Aztec, Egyptian, and aboriginal artisans – reinterpreting, never copying, the visions of these ancient masters. The natural world has always captured and held his imagination as well, as evidenced by the organic twists and turns of the pliant metal.
Lochlin says; “When I go to work, I just walk out my kitchen door, down a spiral staircase and into my shop. It is a magical space overlooking the city of Montpelier and the hills beyond. I have been blessed in my life to be able to express my creativity every day. One of my greatest joys is to know that so many people wear my jewelry as a way to express themselves. When you wear a piece of my jewelry, you sense the connection between the contemporary and the ancient. This work becomes a part of the wearer. My sculptural jewelry is created primarily in bronze. The bronze is hand worked in many ways and then given a variety of rich surface finishes including natural bronze, antique silver, ocean blue and dark copper.”
