Description
Shoreline Layers | Lake Michigan Ceramic Bowl
This Lake Michigan ceramic bowl is part of my handmade porcelain work shaped by the light, sand, and shifting textures of the shoreline here in Grand Haven.
The surface reflects the layered patterns often revealed along the lakeshore—bands of sand, darker mineral lines, and subtle color shifts left behind as water moves across the beach. A soft horizontal band moves across the form, echoing the quiet layers that appear where waves repeatedly meet the sand.
The glaze surface carries a gentle speckled texture that recalls shoreline sand and the small details that appear when the water pulls back.
At 11 inches in diameter and 5.5 inches tall, the bowl works comfortably as a serving vessel or as a quiet centerpiece on a table. The broad interior allows the layered glaze and subtle markings to catch changing light throughout the day.
The result is a bowl that carries a sense of the lakeshore—sand shifting beneath water, mineral lines left behind by waves, and the steady rhythm of the lake shaping the shoreline.
I wrote more about how the Lake Michigan shoreline influences my ceramic surfaces in a recent reflection.
Each piece is hand built and one of a kind.
