Description
Shoreline Movement
Walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline and you’ll notice that the sand is never quite the same twice.
Water moves in and out, leaving behind lines, ridges, textures, and subtle changes in the surface. Those small details are what I was thinking about as I made Shoreline Movement.
The exterior of this hand-built porcelain bowl incorporates actual Lake Michigan beach sand, creating a tactile surface that feels connected to the place that inspired it. A blue line moves around the bowl, loosely following the rhythm of water along the shore.
Inside, I kept the surface quiet. A creamy white glaze provides a simple contrast to the more textured exterior and makes the bowl functional for serving food.
At 12 inches across, this is a generous bowl—large enough for salads, vegetables, fruit, or simply sitting on a table where you can enjoy it every day.
Like so much of my work, this piece isn’t meant to reproduce Lake Michigan. It comes from looking closely at what happens along its edges—the marks, movement, and small changes that are easy to walk past without noticing.
