Description
This Lake Michigan ceramic vase is part of my handmade porcelain work shaped by shoreline light, sand, and water along the lakeshore here in Grand Haven.
On one side of the vessel are small windows cut into the form. They are simple openings, but they shift how the piece is experienced — small views in and out. The title, Windows into My World, reflects that quiet exchange between what we see around us and what we carry inside.
The surface includes real Lake Michigan beach sand layered into a proprietary glaze. As it fires, the sand softens into subtle shifts of texture that echo the movement of water across the shoreline.
Small inclusions of beach glass, black and white sand, and found stones are embedded into the surface — materials gathered while walking the lakeshore that become part of the finished vessel.
The result is a quiet architectural form that carries the feeling of the waterfront: sand moving against water, light shifting across texture. This Lake Michigan ceramic vase reflects the quiet movement of sand, water, and shoreline light. I wrote more about this approach to surface and place in a recent reflection.
Each piece is hand built and one of a kind.
The vessel pictured here is the exact piece that will arrive at your door.
