When does Art Begin?
“Art begins when an observer’s sensibilities engage with the understatements of a calculating craftsman.” (Sara Genn)
I am taking a drawing class on Wednesday evenings with one of our local artists who manages another gallery, The Fire Barn Gallery. I am a potter never having learned how to draw. It has been interesting. One of the statements that has resonated with me is this: “Everyone can draw. Children are experts at drawing. They just do it without worry.” Listening, looking, attempting to put line to page is a challenge. One thing that is happening with my pottery is that I am thinking about putting line on my work and the placement of it.
One of our potters, Julie Devers, has very understated work with a lot of information in each pot, if you take the time to really look.
