Revisiting the Artwork of Mark Mehaffey

During the years that I owned my brick-and-mortar gallery, I had the opportunity to represent many talented artists whose work continues to stay with me long after the exhibitions ended. One of those artists is Mark Mehaffey.

I represented Mark because I deeply respected his commitment to working daily as an artist. Over the years, he has taught throughout the United States and internationally, sharing both his technical knowledge and his thoughtful approach to painting.

What first drew me to Mark’s work — and what continues to hold my attention today — is the focus and depth within his paintings. His work carries wonderful and often unexpected color combinations, all rooted in his deep connection to the outdoors. Whether painting a quiet road, a winter landscape, or a more abstract narrative piece, there is always a strong sense of observation and interpretation.

Mark’s paintings are never simply illustrations of a scene. They are emotional responses to light, atmosphere, memory, and place.

Mark is currently exhibiting at the J Petter Gallery in Douglas, Michigan. Looking at his recent work, I am reminded again of the confidence and energy within his painting process. The landscapes feel immediate and alive — expressive brushwork balanced with careful structure and design.

One of the works that especially caught my attention is Stacked Wisdom, a 30 x 22 mixed water media painting on paper. An art magazine had asked Mark to create something different from his usual work, and the result feels both thoughtful and personal.

The painting reflects Mark’s belief that our “animal cousins” may currently hold more wisdom than we do. The imagery carries a quiet intensity — layered marks, movement, and the presence of birds suggesting instinct, observation, and reflection.

Even within this different direction, the piece still feels connected to the outdoors and to Mark’s long-standing interest in interpretation over illustration. His work consistently moves beyond documenting a scene and instead invites viewers to consider mood, meaning, and emotional connection.

As someone whose own work is grounded in daily observation of the Lake Michigan shoreline, I continue to appreciate artists who remain connected to the natural world while allowing their work to evolve over time.

I am grateful our paths crossed years ago through the gallery and thankful to continue following his work today.
